Private Scholarships Each year UCSC students apply for and receive thousands of scholarship dollars from private organizations. The organizations have their own eligibility criteria and application processes. Many organizations award scholarships to qualified students regardless of financial need. The internet is an excellent place to begin your search for scholarship opportunities. However, beware of scholarship scams. A good rule of thumb is: "If you have to pay money to get money, it's probably a scam." Scholarship Search Engines

The Chicana/Latina Foundation This is a non-profit in existence since 1977 which offers scholarships annually. Coalition of Higher Education Assistance Organizations (COHEAO) COHEAO offers a small number of $1,000 scholarships. Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard Scholarship Guide Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard has compiled a list of scholarships for college students. Be sure to check with the agencies listed for updated information and deadlines. Davis-Putter Scholarships This fund provides need-based scholarships to college students actively working for peace and justice and who are part of the progressive movement on the campus and in the community. Gates Milleniumn Scholars The 2010 nomination submission deadline is January 11, 2010 (11:59 p.m. EST). The goal of GMS is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students with significant financial need to reach their highest potential. Hispanic Association of Scholarships and Universities Scholarships (HACU) This organization accepts applications from students who demonstrate financial need, meet their scholarship criteria and attend an HACU member institution. UC Santa Cruz is a member institution. Hispanic College Fund Scholarships Several scholarships are offered for students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled as full-time undergraduate students. Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) Scholarships are open to Hispanic-Americans who are U.S. citizens or permanent resident, submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), will be full time undergraduate students, and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Latino College Dollars The Latino College Dollars Directory, published by The Tomás Rivera Policy Institute, provides a comprehensive list of scholarships. The Rising Farmworker Dream Fund (RFDF) Awards are intended to encourage the sons and daughters of farmworkers to pursue MBA degrees and in turn, develop more leaders who will channel resources to the U.S. farmworking community. Sallie Mae Fund Scholarships Several scholarships are available from this organization. Silicon Valley Community Foundation Scholarships The Foundation administers a variety of scholarship programs with the majority of the awards designated for residents of San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. SPENDonLIFE Scholarship Program This program offers financial assistance for college students who are unable to obtain student loans due to a negative credit history. | ||||||
