Private Scholarships

What is a Private Scholarship?
Each year UCSC students apply for and receive thousands of dollars from private, or "outside agency" scholarships. These scholarships are awarded by organizations outside UCSC and have their own separate criteria and application processes. Many organizations award scholarships to qualified students regardless of financial need. The internet is an excellent place to begin your search for scholarship opportunities. Beware of scholarship scams, however. A good rule of thumb is: "If you have to pay money to get money, it's probably a scam." (finaid.org)

Scholarship Search Engines
These are 2 popular sites to start your scholarship search online.

  1. FastWeb
  2. Broke Scholar

Note: UC Santa Cruz is not affiliated with these sites, which may be sponsored by lenders or other commercial interests. Before entering personal information at these (or any other) sites, be sure to read the site's privacy policy carefully.

Libraries, high schools, and employment are some of the other ways students find outside agency scholarships. Also see: scholarship information for students eligible for the AB 540 tuition exemption and Latino College Dollars - 2007-08 Scholarship Guide.
