Grants for Undergraduate Students

Grant funding is provided by the federal government, the state of California, and UC Santa Cruz to assist undergraduate students who demonstrate the greatest financial need. Grants do not have to be repaid.

Academic Competitiveness Grants (ACG) are awarded by the federal government to first- and second-year undergraduates demonstrating a high level of need. There are a number of strict requirements that students must meet to be eligible for the ACG:

ACG – 1st Year (up to $750)
- US citizens
- Pell grant eligible
- Completed rigorous high school course load (as determined by Financial Aid Office)
- Enrolled full-time (at least 12 units)
- Enrolled in the first year of program study at a university level

To receive the 1st year ACG, students cannot have been previously enrolled in a full undergraduate program as an admitted student. Non-degree related courses taken during high school do not affect eligibility.

ACG – 2nd Year (up to $1300)
- US citizens
- Pell grant eligible
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the start of sophomore academic year
- Enrolled full-time (at least 12 units)
- Enrolled in the second year of program study at a university level

The Financial Aid Office makes the final determination on student eligibility for the ACG. The award will be automatically included in a student's aid offer. ACG grants reduce self-help aid (work-study, Perkins Loan, and/or Federal Direct Loans). Students can only receive each individual grant once, but the awarding of the grant is based on academic credits, not school year. Once the maximum amount of the grant is reached, the value cannot be extended.
