We encourage everyone to get involved within our community. If you would like to participate in an official capacity, here are some opportunities you may want to check out.
College Eight Programs Office
The Programs Office has a fifteen person student staff, and is always looking for enthusiastic and creative students to join. Take a look at their web site to see the Programs Office is all about. They also have positions open for Orientation Leaders (OL’s), who help acclimate new to students to UCSC in the fall, and work on graduation and other events throughout the academic year.
Resident Assistants
Residential Assistants (RA’s) are student leaders employed by the college on a live in basis. Resident Assistants serve in a unique position as peer helpers in the college apartments and residence halls and help residents adjust to the college environment, and promote the development of a safe, friendly, and non threatening community in which students can study, live, and grow. If you are interested in becoming a Resident Assistant you should talk to a current staff member or Coordinator for Residential Education about the position. Selection information is distributed at the beginning of Winter Quarter and interviews take place throughout the quarter. Selected individuals are required to complete a 2-unit class in the spring quarter and two weeks of pre fall training in September as well as other ongoing trainings.
Senate
The Senate, working closely with the Programs Office, seeks to address issues affecting College Eight and the broader campus, as well as planning events for College Eight students. All College Eight students are encouraged to come to the weekly senate meetings. It is a great opportunity to get involved and make a difference.
Waste Reduction
For 5,000 years, the largest human-made structure on Earth was the Great Wall of China. Now, it is the Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island New York. College Eight Waste Reduction is a student-supported program at the University of California, Santa Cruz that works to educate students about reducing consumption and aid in the recycling of ink cartridges, hazardous wastes, electronics, light bulbs, glasses, metals, plastics and paper. Waste Reduction at College Eight conducts a weekly pick-up of compostable scraps from the resident apartments and College Cafe, as well as recycling the discarded college mail. The program diverts a significant volume of materials from disposal on a daily basis through plastic, glass, and mixed paper recycling centers maintained throughout the college and contributes to waste reduction awareness and implementation on the University campus. Student run since 1996, our main focus is educating students about waste management. Waste reduction challenges the patterns of wasteful living/consumption that are present in our society, and by preserving a student recycling program at College Eight, the program seeks to encourage thoughtful consumption in our community and beyond.
