Welcome to College Eight!

Housing

College Eight has traditional residence halls and apartments. All incoming freshmen will be housed in the residence halls-mostly in double rooms, while transfer students will be placed in double rooms in the College Eight apartments or residence halls according to availability. Continuing sophomores, juniors and seniors are intermixed throughout the residence halls and apartments.

The Lifestyle Questionnaire

As a new student you will be assigned a roommate / apartmentmates prior to your arrival. The basis for this assignment is the online lifestyle questionnaire. It is extremely important that you complete your housing questionnaire as fully and thoughtfully as possible. Tell us something about yourself that will help in finding a compatible roommate. We will do our best to match you with someone who shares as many of your interests, outlooks and attitudes as possible.

Your roommate / apartmentmates may or may not become your best friend(s), but they will surely be remembered for many years to come simply because of the experiences you will share. Like everything else, good relationships take time and effort. Being and having a good roommate will probably be one of your priorities and now is the time to start considering the implications of sharing a room. Your relationship can have an effect on almost everything else you do in college and you will probably want to work to make it one of the best parts of your entire experience.

Once you receive your new roommate’s (or apartmentmates’) address and phone number in late August, you may want to write or contact her/him so you can get to know each other before you get here. If you have already discussed your living arrangements it will make the transition to campus life that much easier.

Additionally, there is a section in the questionaire where you can request to be roomates with someone you already know.

"L" Shaped Residence Hall

Residence Halls

We have eight traditional residence halls, two in each quad, housing approximately 100 students per quad. Each quad consists of a three story “L” shaped building with a two story “Garden” building behind each “L” building. The quads share a courtyard with an open grassy area with lots of sunlight. All quads are only a short distance from the Oakes/College Eight Dining Hall and our administrative offices. There are laundry facilities in each “L” building.

Coed or Single-Sex Halls

The halls at College Eight are coeducational with the exception of a women’s hall and, if requested, a men’s hall. On coed halls, men and women are assigned to neighboring rooms. Coed halls have either a common bathroom which has been designed to ensure privacy, or two bathrooms (men’s and women’s). Past experience at the college indicates that within a coed environment residents quickly develop respect for one another, creating a healthy and mature environment. Single-sex halls are provided for those who would prefer them. Please be sure to indicate your preference on your housing questionnaire.

Dorm Community and RA's

Your residence hall may be looked at as an extended family and, like a family, you will share a number of common areas. Each quad has a lobby with a TV and VCR and each hall has a lounge that serves as an informal setting for card games, study breaks, movie nights, residence hall meetings, and discussion groups in conjunction with residential and academic life.

Residential Assistants (RAs) live in each residence hall building and there are two Coordinators for Residential Education (CREs) for all four quads. (See section on Residential Staff for an explanation of RA and CRE roles.)

What to Bring When Moving In

Your room will have a bed (twin, extra long), desk, chair, dresser, a closet for each occupant, and a wastebasket to share. The floor has wall-to-wall carpeting, and the windows have shades (drapes in apartments). Overhead lighting is in all rooms, and we recommend that you bring a study lamp for your desk. The desks are designed for lamps that sit on top of the desk rather than clip on the side. Vacuum cleaners are issued to each floor of the residence halls.

We recommend that you don’t bring extra furniture with you until you’ve seen how all the “essentials” you and your roommate bring fit into the room. There is no storage space available at the college, so everything you bring must stay in your room. You will also find that the closet and dresser space for clothes is limited. Bring only what you’ll need, and remember that Santa Cruz is a rather informal place.

Suites

Each quad has three suites just off the larger hallways, which accommodate six students in each suite. The suites consist of three smaller double rooms, a private bathroom and a living room. Suite residents do their own housekeeping. Suites are especially suited for mature, quiet and studious residents who are willing to make an extra effort for the reward of this option.

Apartments

Transfer students will be placed in single or double rooms in the apartments or residence halls according to availability. Freshmen are not placed in the apartments. The apartments are designed for four or five residents. The basic four person floor plans are four single rooms, two single rooms and one double, and two double rooms. Five person apartments have two singles and a triple room, three singles and a double, or one double and one triple room. Each apartment has its own small deck extending from the dining room’s sliding glass doors. Barbecues are prohibited on the decks for safety reasons. We suggest that apartment residents bring or purchase outdoor furniture for their decks as the furniture inside the apartment may not be taken outside.

Each apartment is furnished with a dining room table and chairs, a sofa, chairs, small tables, and a lamp in the living room. The bedrooms have a bed, desk, chair, dresser, and bookcase for each resident, and a wastebasket to share. The bedrooms also have a built-in closet for each resident. The bathrooms include two sinks in a common area and either a toilet and shower in separate compartments, or a bathtub and toilet together in one compartment.
