10 Steps to Graduate:

Step 1 -- Announce your Intent to Graduate from UCSC
To graduate from UCSC, you must apply to graduate at the Registrar's Office, or at their webpage: http://reg.ucsc.edu/graduation_announcerequest.htm You should apply to graduate only for the quarter in which you will be completing all graduation requirements. The deadline for Winter ‘08 is February 1. The deadline for Spring ‘08 is April 25. The deadline for Summer ‘08 is July 31. *Note: completing this step does not sign you up for College Eight's Commencement Ceremony...keep reading!

Step 2 -- Complete all Academic Requirements
In order to receive a diploma, make sure you complete all academic requirements, including all general education, major and university requirements. Check your degree progress on your student portal (my.ucsc.edu) to ensure that you are on track to graduate. If you have further questions, check-in with your College and/or major department advisors to confirm you have satisfied all requirements to graduate.

Step 3 -- Register for College Eight Commencement by May 16th
To participate in the College Eight Commencement Ceremony and/or have your name listed in the print program you must register on-line by Friday, May 16. It’s easy! Just click on the graduation registration link at the top of this page. College Eight students who plan to complete all requirements by the end of Fall 2008 are eligible to participate in the June ceremony.

When you register online, you will also have the opportunity to:
    • Invite your favorite faculty members to the Commencement Ceremony
    • Nominate a student speaker for Commencement
    • Indicate interest in being on the Senior Celebration planning committee
    • Receive two parking passes for the Commencement Ceremony at the local address you specify on the registration form.

Step 4 -- Check Your "Public Information" Status
All students have a "Public Information" status (a.k.a. Directory Restriction, FERPA or NRI) with the Office of the Registrar. The status of your personal information is currently set as either "Releasable" or "Restricted." Some students set their status to "RESTRICTED" without being aware or the implications. It is imperative that you check your status and confirm it is set as you wish, in light of the following:

     * If your status is set to "RESTRICTED" as of 10pm, Tuesday, May 27, College Eight is required by law to omit your name in the printed graduation program, regardless of your wishes.
     * If your status is set to "RELEASABLE" as of 10pm on Tuesday, May 13, we can and will print your name in the program (provided you have registered via Step 3).

**Please check your status now. If you have special circumstances and wish to retain a "restricted" status but also wish to have your name printed in the program, please contact Mike Kittredge A.S.A.P. at 459-4279.

Step 5 – Participate in planning Senior Commencement Activities
Contact the College Eight Programs Office at 459-4279 if you are interested in planning an end of the year senior celebration or want to help choose student speakers.

Step 6 -- Order Announcements & Caps/Gowns, starting April 14
Caps and gowns are strongly encouraged for the Commencement Ceremony. Although there is an option to rent or buy a baccalaureate hood, College Eight will not be “hooding” graduates during the ceremony. Order Announcements, Caps & Gowns and other items at the Bay Tree Bookstore Graduation Center beginning Monday, April 14. You may order many items at the UCSC Baytree Bookstore’s website: http://slugstore.ucsc.edu. You are strongly advised to order your Announcements at least five weeks ahead of graduation to receive them on time.

Step 7 -- Pick Up Regalia, starting June 9
Caps and gowns that have been ordered will be distributed at the Bay Tree Bookstore, 2nd floor, beginning Monday, June 9.

Step 8 – Attend College Eight Commencement Rehearsal
June 13, 4:00-5:30pm (meet at the College Eight Plaza)
A brief Commencement Rehearsal will be held on Friday, June 13, meeting at the College Eight Plaza. We will walk through the ceremony procedures and answer any last-minute questions.

Step 9 -- Graduation Day, June 14, 2008!
Arrive at the College Eight Plaza no later than 11:30am. Please don’t be late. You will need to check in and prepare for the 2008 Senior Photo, which will be taken promptly at noon. Remember: you only have two parking passes per graduate. You may want someone to drop you off before your guests head to the Lower West Field.

Step 10 –- Celebrate! You’re done!

Additional Information:

Parking Graduation Weekend
Parking on campus will be very limited, with 10 colleges having ceremonies. Each registered graduate will receive only two (2) parking passes for the day, so you may need to squeeze, carpool, shuttle, take the bus, walk, or be otherwise creative. Your guests should place a pass on their dash and follow the signs that read "West Side Graduations" and "College Eight." Parking officials will direct cars to the appropriate lot, from which guests may walk or shuttle to the ceremony site at the Lower West Field.

Campus Shuttles/Disability Vans
Campus shuttles will be available for those not able to park within walking distance of the Commencement Ceremony. For those with disability needs, please contact the College Eight Programs office (831-459-4279) by May 16th to arrange for accommodations.

College Honors
College Eight will be conferring academic honors on graduating seniors who have achieved overall excellence in their coursework for their bachelor’s degree. Only seniors who have announced candidacy to graduate are reviewed for Honors. Honors are based on grades and narrative evaluations from all courses taken at UCSC as well as grades from courses transferred to UCSC. Graduates’ files are reviewed by the College Eight Academic Standing Committee for selection. Please note that while honors and awards are listed in the Commencement Program whenever possible, they are not announced individually at the ceremony (College Honors and Honors in the Major will be recognized at the ceremony).

Commencement Photos
As guests may not approach the stage to take photographs of their grads, professional photographers will be present, taking close-up, individual photographs of each graduate as s/he walks across the stage and receives a scroll from the Provost. Within two weeks of graduation you will receive a "proof" in the mail, at no cost or obligation to buy (sent to the address you provided on the online Commencement Registration form). For more details visit http://www.chappell.com/.

Commencement Reception
Walk or shuttle to this celebratory reception, held at the College Eight Plaza, immediately following the Commencement.

Accommodations and Dinner Reservations
Make any reservations as soon as possible: there are ten UCSC College Commencements and many more celebrations during the weekend. Rooms/restaurants book quickly!
