College Eight values its alumni, and we are proud to consider you an integral part of our community. College Eight Alumni fund important programs, including scholarship programs for low-income students, and two-unit first-year seminars. Alumni participation is invaluable to our first-year Sustainability Program and our career-oriented events, in which undergraduates get the opportunity to learn about career options through meeting our alumni.

Alumni Events

Banana Slug Spring Fair:

The Annual Banana Slug Spring Fair will occur Saturday, April 22nd 2006. This year College Eight will unite with Environmental Studies for a joint reunion, entitled “Living the Dream: Reflections on Life at UCSC and Beyond.” There will be a panel discussion, featuring College Eight and Environmental Studies alumni active in environmental fields, and a catered reception. • Educational Careers Dinner 2/22/06:
  The first ever Educational Careers Dinner will be held on Wednesday February 22nd; the second in our series of career-themed events. Several local teachers/educators will meet with a small group of undergraduates for dinner, and discuss their careers. If you are a local teacher, and would like to talk to undergraduates about your career, contact kpoole@ucsc.edu.

• Medical Careers Dinner 1/25/06:
  The first in our series of career-themed events was a Medical Careers Dinner. Several alumni from varying professions within the field of Medicine/Health Care will meet with a select group of our undergraduates. The students would particularly like to hear about post-graduate training, choosing a specialty, the value of volunteering and finding employment. If you are an alumna/us employed in a health care profession and would like to participate, contact kpoole@ucsc.edu.

 

How to Contribute

In a recent survey, College Eight undergraduates indicated that they would very much like to have a mentor / mentee relationship with their alumni. Alumni can help the students form an idea of what they can do after college, offer career advice and networking skills, and motivate students by their successes. The career fields that most interest College Eight Undergraduates are: Education/Teaching, Medicine/Healthcare, Entrepreneurial Business, Environmental Careers and Journalism.

If you are an alumna/us currently active in one of these fields, and willing to participate in an informal meeting or event with current students, please email the Provost’s intern at kpoole@ucsc.edu. Your participation makes these events possible!
