Peggy Church (Director)

I joined the DRC Office as the Director in September, 2005. My time is split between two major roles in the DRC: administrator and service coordinator. The students I see as a service coordinator are primarily those with learning disabilities. I also do screenings with students who think they might have a learning disability. As administrator, I attend meetings throughout campus where I represent the DRC and our students. Previously I was in the UCSC School of Engineering for several years as Manager of Undergraduate Advising and Student Affairs. I have been an advisor/counselor for students with disabilities at San Jose State University, West Valley College, Monterey Peninsula College and in private practice as a vocational rehabilitation counselor.

My bachelor’s degree is from UC Davis and my master’s degree is from San Jose State University. My most recent continuing education coursework was in medical anthropology (with Dr. Nancy Chen) where I studied cultural issues of disability. My husband, Tom, works in a program like the DRC at CSU, Fresno. He comes home almost every weekend to our family: two daughters (one in college and one in high school), two cats, and most of the time… one dog.

Barbara Duron (Assistant Director)

I have worked at the Disability Resource Center for 22 years, in varying capacities. I am currently the Assistant Director, and also work directly with students as a service coordinator. I primarily work with students who have learning disabilities or psychological disabilities. Some of my favorite aspects of this job are working with students to creatively solve problems, and watching students develop their self-confidence and independence.

I am an alumna of UCSC, with a degree in fine art. I still paint and draw in my free time. While training for the SF-to-LA AIDS ride several years ago, I discovered a love for cycling, which I indulge in as often as possible. I am currently training for a couple of upcoming bicycling vacations. I also enjoy yoga, hiking, and more recently, bird watching.

Karen Keen (Program Services Coordinator)

As a Program Services Coordinator with the Disability Resource Center since Fall 2000, I manage services for students with a variety of disabilities, including visual, hearing, mobility, orthopedic, and psychological disabilities. I also see those with chronic systemic or neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, environmental illness and diabetes. Prior to coming to the DRC, I worked as a Mental Health Therapist with a non-profit community mental health organization in Portland, Oregon, and also worked for a season with the Oregon Disabilities Commission as an ADA Specialist. I hold a M.S. in Education (Counseling with a Deafness emphasis) from Western Oregon University and a M.A. in Exegetical Theology from Western Seminary.

In my free time I enjoy being a perpetual learner. Besides being a book worm and a writer, I love breathing the fresh air during frequent hikes in the Santa Cruz redwoods and walks along the ocean cliffs. I also play the guitar (okay, so I’ve been playing the same old songs for 10 years, but still...) and hope to someday take up the mandolin when I have more time for music.

Valerie Steward (Office Manager)

Hello and welcome to the Disability Resource Center’s web site! I began working at the DRC in June, 2000 as the Reception Manager and recently took on the job of Office Manager. I am responsible for taking care of the “behind the scene” daily operation of the office including budget planning and tracking, purchasing equipment and supplies, monitoring and tracking information in our new database that was launched Winter quarter, 2006.

The number one reason I love working at UCSC is contact with the students. Working with students with disabilities is rewarding, especially to see our clients succeed at the university level and graduate. I also feel very fortunate to work in this beautiful environment and enjoy taking walks during lunch every day. I have a B.A. from Humboldt State University, am married and have two daughters ages 27 and 25. My husband and I, along with our feisty dog, enjoy camping trips to Montana to visit our daughters who live in Bozeman. We also enjoy snow skiing and backpacking in the Sierras.

Angie Holleman (Adaptive Technology Coordinator)

As the Adaptive Technology Coordinator at the Disability Resource Center, I specialize in assisting students with adaptive equipment and software. My job also involves hiring, training and supervising student employees who help other students with print accommodations and a variety of other tasks. Some of these tasks include reading books to tape, scanning written materials to electronic texts, or assisting students in the library or laboratory. Last year I helped to launch the Disability Resource Center’s newsletter, “Perspectives.” As the co-editor, I worked with several staff members and students who wrote articles related to a variety of topics.

Before joining the Disability Resource Center, I worked as an advocate for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and/or abuse. Gaining this practical, hands-on, "real life" experience helped to facilitate my interest in counseling psychology and working with youth. In 2006, I began a graduate degree program in clinical psychology with a goal of becoming a Marriage Family Therapist.
