HOW TO ENROLL IN THE CROWN CORE COURSE
All frosh (even those with AP or transfer credits) must enroll in a section
of the Crown Core Course - Ethical Issues in Emerging Technologies. Your
Entry Level Writing Requirement status determines your CRWN 80A or 80B
section. The following will help you enroll correctly.
STEP 1: DETERMINE YOUR STATUS ON THE ENTRY LEVEL WRITING REQUIREMENT
(ELWR).
You can satisfy this UC requirement by any one of the following ways by scoring:
- 8 or above on the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE) in spring OR
fall during Fall Orientation. (If you took the May exam you may not take the
fall exam, but will have an opportunity to take the exam again in November.)
- 680 or higher on the SAT II Writing Test
- 680 or higher on the SAT Reasoning Test, Writing section
- 3 or above on the AP English Language or AP English Literature Exam
- 5 or above on the IBH Higher Level English Language A-1 Exam
- C or better on a UC transferable English composition course
Exam score reports and official college transcripts must be sent to the UCSC Admissions Office.
In addition please bring a copy of exam scores or college composition class transcripts with you in the fall (unofficial is okay) so the College can verify your placement in the correct core course section in case official scores are not yet entered in the system.
STEP 2: DETERMINE YOUR CROWN CORE GROUP AND FOLLOW THE ENROLLMENT INSTRUCTIONS
ELWR-NOT SATISFIED and ELWR-SATISFIED section designations will be announced at the special first lecture on Wed. Sept. 24 at 7:00 p.m. in Classroom Unit 2.
Until then you can enroll in your other classes; however be sure to reserve space for the Crown lecture (Mondays 7:00-8:45 p.m.) and a few section times. Section times vary and may be viewed on-line in the Fall Schedule of Classes. Because you won't know which is an 80A ELWR-NOT SATISFIED or ELWR-SATISFIED section until the special first lecture, reserve several section times in your schedule in case your preferred choice is a section type you don't belong in or it fills quickly when core course enrollment opens.
GROUP I.
If you have not satisfied ELWR (see above ways), you should enroll in an 80A ELWR- NOT SATISFIED section.
GROUP II.
If you have satisfied ELWR (see above ways) but have not satisfied the C1 requirement (see the GROUP III list), you should enroll in an 80A ELWR-SATISFIED section.
GROUP III.
If you have satisfied ELWR (see above ways) and have satisfied the C1 requirement by receiving a:
- Score of 4 or 5 on either AP English Exam or
- Score of 5 on IBH Higher Level English Exam or
- Score of 10 or higher on the AWPE or
- Grade of C or higher from a UC transferable English composition course,
you should enroll in one of the CRWN 80B sections.
PROBLEMS ENROLLING?
THE CROWN CORE COURSE ENROLLMENT BEGINS THURSDAY, SEPT. 25.
Even though the AWPE scores will be automatically sent to the UCSC Admissions Office, you must request to have your official examination scores for the AP, IB, and SAT II sent to the UCSC Admissions Office from the testing service. You can check online at the Student Portal to see if your test scores have been received. If you are satisfying the ELWR with a college composition course, the Admissions Office must receive and evaluate your official college transcript before you can enroll in CRWN 80B.
Because there is often a lag time from when Admissions receives your scores and enters them in the system, please bring a paper copy of your test scores and college composition transcripts (unofficial is okay) when you come in the fall so the College can verify your placement in the correct core course section.
Enroll in your other two fall courses while you are
waiting to get enrolled in core, but remember to reserve space for the Crown
lecture W 7-8:45 p.m. and a section time. Section times vary but may be
viewed on-line in the Fall Schedule of Classes.
