Statement of Purpose

The Research Group for Agro-Food Studies at UC Santa Cruz is a multi-disciplinary collective of graduate students and faculty dedicated to research on issues of broad concern in the field of Agro-Food Studies. The intellectual project of the Research Group is to develop theoretical resources to inform critical engagement with trajectories of change in conventional agro-food networks from ‘field to table.’ This project is complemented by a strong commitment to ‘alternative’ agro-food production and consumption logics in promoting socially just and environmentally sustainable patterns of rural development.

The focal point of the Research Group's activities is the weekly Agro-Food Studies Seminar, now in its seventh year. The seminar program comprises guest speakers, presentations of members’ work in progress, and discussion of recent literature.

The Research Group thrives on the diverse perspectives of its members, from critical political economy to cultural studies approaches, the differing scales and locales at which we conduct research, and the normative values we bring to bear on the theoretical, empirical and institutional dimensions of agro-food networks. Themes of current research interest include:
  • Organic agriculture
  • Integrative approaches to food production and consumption
  • The quality ‘turn’ and alternative agro-food networks
  • California agriculture, labor and social justice
  • Incorporating ‘nature’ in agro-food studies
  • Knowledge production in agro-food networks
  • The sociology of science and technology in agro-food studies
  • Globalization, international markets and ‘Fair Trade’

The Agro-Food Studies Seminar program is decided at the beginning of each quarter in order to ensure flexibility in thematic choice and respond to the changing interests of members. There is also considerable scope for graduate student ‘professional development’ and seminar dates are devoted to presentations of graduate research and conference papers.
