| Overview
A transition to a sustainable society in the 21st century is both necessary and inevitable. Well-educated and engaged students and graduates are central to this transition. They will reach the peaks of their influence and earning power between 2025 and 2050. What they learn and who they work with while they are in college and graduate school will shape not only their lives but also that of their children, both in the United States and around the planet. As such, what they study in their classes and the collaborations with faculty they establish while in college, as well as the civic engagements they pursue before and after graduation are in our hands. The Education, Action and Public Outreach program has as its goals:
To offer top-ranked UCSC students advanced curricular initiatives, junior research fellowships, and internships designed to foster new global leadership;
To foster innovative theoretical work in the social sciences through faculty-student collaboration, linked to policy initiatives and applications necessary for the transition to a sustainable society; and
To develop opportunities for civic engagement through community outreach and collaboration, public communications, summer seminars, student placements at home and abroad, and international networks with other research centers.

- Society, Law, Science and Technology (SLATS) IGERT, NSF-sponsored Integrated Graduate Education, Research, and Training program is to educate and train the next generation of natural and social scientists in understanding the interactions of society, law, technology and science in “risk society,” in order to deepen understanding of how the four are related and to improve approaches to research, development and dissemination of new, potentially-risky technologies. This project is in the planning stages. Please watch this space for updates.
