The Matthews International Capital Management Award, administered through UCSC's Center for Global, International, and Regional Studies (CGIRS), will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and demonstrated engagement with questions associated with the political and economic issues raised by the "Transformation of Asia in the 21st Century." Preference will be given to undergraduate students in any UC Santa Cruz department who will undertake at least one quarter of residence in an Asian country as a student, intern, or writer. Asia is understood as comprising East, South, Southeast and Central sub-regions.

AWARD GUIDELINES

The objective of the Matthews Award is to encourage undergraduate students to pursue innovative study, disciplined research and/or an internship in order to research a political economic problem arising from the transformation of Asia in the 21st century. A successful application must be comprised of a research proposal which critically examines how this transformation impacts one or more of the following issues: global governance, intra-Asian networks and flows, human rights in Asia, environmental sustainability and Asian political and economic relations with the USA. Preference will be given to students who display initiative, raise additional funds, and the capacity to complete research projects in a timely way. The award is intended to fund travel expenses for undergraduate student for any of the following purposes:

-- increasing understanding of communities within Asia
-- study at a college or university in an Asian country
-- internship with a non-governmental organization within Asia

Candidates must be UCSC undergraduate students in good academic standing. Applications must be submitted electronically. To apply, please submit a three-page research proposal, a carefully researched one-page budget with justifications, and a copy of your evaluations via e-mail to global@ucsc.edu. The proposal must concisely explain your experience, preparation, and capacity to research the issues described above.
