Arts and Media

Adilah Barnes, Cowell College, BA, Theater Arts, Black Drama, 1972
Adilah is an award-winning stage actor who's solo show, "I Am That I Am: Woman, Black has toured nationally in 35 states, Europe and the Caribbean. Her television credits include the premiere this February 15th of the HBO movie, "Iron Jawed Angels in which she portrays historical figure, Ida B. Wells. She also currently appears in a national VISA commercial. She is co-founder of the Los Angeles Women's Theater Festival which will host the UCSC Alumni's LA Chapter's scholarship fundraiser this March. She also teaches acting and writing and recently completed her first book, "On My Own Terms: One Actor's Journey". She also hosts her internet talk show, "Adilah", on Blake Radio.com. She has also served on the elected body of the Alumni Council since 1998 and is one of the founders of Black Escargot, an alumni affinity group.

Helen Sam, Kresge College, BA, Sociology, 1998
Helen is the Production Coordinator for the Independent Television Service(ITVS). ITVS funds film projects and programs for public television and PBS. As Production Coordinator, Helen is part of a production team that works closely with independent filmmakers to complete their programs for broadcast, festivals, and distribution.

Donald manages a First-Time Homebuyers Financing Program for the City of Santa Clara. He also has experience in public budgeting, risk management, and contracts and purchasing.

Evelyn Luluquisen, Oakes College, BA Environmental Studies, 1985
Evelyn is a Human Resources Manager at UC Berkeley. She started in the field of human resources as a job developer in a program that assisted immigrants and refugees. She worked her way up in the University of California system and has been here for almost 14 years.

Laura Luster, Stevenson College, BA African-American Studies, 1971
Laura is Program Manager for Luster National, Inc. She has experience working in Not-for-Profits, Business, Engineering/Construction, Workforce & Community Development, and Higher Education. She received a Ph.D. in Education from Stanford University in 1992.

Karen is a Financial Analyst with Chevron Texaco.

Don Mesa, Oakes College, BA Economics, 1995
Don Mesa started out with a non-profit community agency, setting up a promotional goods business to provide disadvantaged youth with jobs. He moved to Japan to work in the game industry, dealing with licensing, sales and distribution, then to marketing. He is currently looking after the James Bond franchise at Electronic Arts.

Dom Siababa, Merrill College, BA Sociology, 1975
Dom is a Manager with Pacific Gas and Electric Company. He has had a number of different jobs within PG&E starting as an individual contributor and working hiss way through the company to his present position.

Dalia Terleckaite, MA Economics, 2002
Dalia works in Marketing with Integnology. She received a B.A. in International Economics from Vilnius University.

John Valmores, Oakes College, BA History, 1995
John is an independent consultant who spent 8 years working as a stockbroker for some of the biggest firms on Wall Street. He was also instrumental, as a charter member, in establishing and online financial services company. He spent the last two years working for an investment bank before starting his own enterprise in the commercial real estate business.

Jasmine Berke, Merrill College, BA Politics, 1978
As a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine Jasmine heals patients with Acupuncture treatments and Herbal medicine. She treats a wide variety of health problems including, colds, flus, asthma, menstrual problems, PMS, headaches, all kinds of pain, digestive disorders, fatigue, infertility, pregnancy, neurological disorders, hormonal imbalances, many difficult to treat chronic health problems and supports people with cancer and hepatitis. She works with babies, children, adults and seniors. She loves her work and finds it very rewarding to make people feel better in their body, mind, and spirit. Jasmine received her degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Five Branches Institute in 1992.

Jerome Booker, Stevenson College, BS Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology, 1997
Jerome is currently a fourth year medical student at UC San Francisco. While at UC Santa Cruz, Jerome attended MMEP summer internship at Yale school of Medicine. After graduating he worked for UCSF at NASA/AMES Research Center doing osteoporosis research. He then worked for DNAX Research Center in their protein chemistry lab. Then Jerome worked for Stanford Medical School helping to start-up a new genetics lab, which is researching the gene responsible for hand deformities. During this time he took the MCAT' twice and applied for medical school. In 2000, he was accepted to UCSF medical school. While at UCSF, Jerome was diagnosed with a learning disability, and has overcome the obstacles it presented.

Adriana is a research scientist for Applied Biosystems. She also received her E.M.T. certification from San Francisco State University.

Dale Villasenor, Oakes College, BS Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology, 1995
Dale is a Dentist with Contra Costa Dental. He received a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Columbia University School of Dental & Oral Surgery.

eeman agrama, Merrill College, BA Psychology, 1996
eeman is Coordinator of Residential Education at UC Santa Cruz's College Ten. As Coordinator for Residential Education, eeman has been part of the pioneering staff team which opened College Ten in the Fall of 2002 and works closely with the staff and student community to develop College Ten's theme of "Social Justice and Community." eeman received an MS in Student Affairs and Counseling from USC in 1999.

Juan is a Professor at CSU Fresno. He received a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Stanford University in 1984. After receiving his advanced degree in anthropology and becoming a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist he became a Counselor Educator. He's also President of Xipe Totec Hispanic Institute of Transcultural Psychotherapy, Inc.

Mark works for the City of Los Angeles in the Office of the City Administrative Officer and provides budgetary and policy analysis for the City's Information Technology Agency.

John is a Case Manager, Consumer Service Coordinator at North Los Angeles County Regional Center. He received a MSW in Social Work at University of Southern California, 1975.

Andres Jimenez, Merrill College, BA Politics, Latin American & Latino Studies, 1975
Andres is Director of UCOP California Policy Research. He received his Ph.D. in Politics from UC Berkeley. He is also a national leader in public policy studies, a program innovator, director of U.S. Mexico exchange programs and co-coordinator of UC Santa Cruz's Latino Alumni Network.

John Nishio, Porter College, BA Biology, 1978
John is Director, Biocompatible Plant Research Institute at CSU Chico and Adjunct Professor. He was a professor of plant cell biology at the University of Wyoming for 13 years before moving to Chico in 2002. He received a Ph.D. in Plant Molecular & Physiological Biology at UC Berkeley. Research interests are in plant stress physiology, agriculture, and proteomics. He has recently reactivated his deep interest in science education for teachers and k-12 students. He is teaching a life sciences course for the master's in science teaching program at CSU Chico this spring. His experiences include working as a janitor, farm laborer, secretary, fire fighter, national park ranger naturalist, environmental educator, and actor. He completed all the coursework for an MA degree in Environmental Education at California State University, San Francisco.

Patricia is currently a a graduate student in the Molecular Biology department at the University of Utah.

Isha Seales

Isha is a Staff Research Associate II with UC San Francisco. She recently published a first author review entitled Mouse Models for Infiltrative Gliomas for a reference book that documents important advances in Neuro-Oncology and describes advances in genomic and molecular techniques and their medical and therapeutic implications.

Cecilie Hoffman, Merrill College, BA Linguistics, 1979
Cecilie is a self-employed Business Analyst and Project Manager for software development projects. Having spent over twenty years in Silicon Valley, she has seen two full cycles of economic boom and bust. She has worked at four start-up organizations, started her own business (and shut it down) and worked for both domestic and international companies. She has been an employee and a consultant. She specializes in bridging cultural gaps, such as the abyss between Engineering and Marketing. She received her MA in Linguistics from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1981.

Carol Hoshizaki, Crown College, BS Biology, 1981
Carol is a Data Manager with Community Technology Alliance. She also has a BA in English Literature from UC Los Angeles, 1976. She has worked in the relational database field for almost 20 years in the nonprofit, healthcare, medical software, and insurance brokerage industries. She is currently Data Manager & Taxonomist for www.HelpSCC.org, a searchable database of community resources for Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties.

Enrico is Outreach Coordinator for the EAO Path Program in the Pajaro Valley Unified School Disrtict. The EAO Path helps students develop academic pathways starting in 4th grade, tracks them through graduation from high school, and onto college.

Sandra received her MA in Education from CSU Northridge in 2003. She is now a school counselor and enjoys advocating for and counseling a diverse group of people of all ages in the K-12 educational system.

Sylvia is principal at an elementary school in Pajaro Valley Unified School District where she worked as a classroom aide over 30 years ago.
She received her MA in Education from San Jose State in 2000.

Rebecca Ray, Cowell College, BS in Biology and Chemistry, 1970
Rebecca was the first woman to be hired as an environmental health specialist for the City of Berkeley. She is a teacher for all ages in public and private schools and childcare settings. She also teaches Marine biology for the Pacific Rim Math Science Upward Bound summer program at Oakes College.
