UCSC Sixteenth Annual
Multicultural Career Conference
"Creating Connections - Building Your Future"

The conference day schedule includes the following:

(10:00-11:30 am        Alumni gathering -- the University Center, Alumni Association
                                 Conference Room Colleges 9 & 10)

11:30 am -                Conference begins -- Lunch with ALUMNI and STUDENTS
12:30 pm                   Colleges 9 & 10 Dining Hall Stage Room

12:30-2:00 pm          The ethnic sessions which connect students and alumni
                                 of similar ethnic backgrounds for discussion of various issues.

2:00-3:30 pm            Alumni career panels will provide an opportunity for students
                                 to learn about various career fields as well as graduate school.

3:30-5:00 pm            The day concludes with a reception. --

Adilah Barnes, Cowell College, BA, Theater Arts, Black Drama, 1972
Adilah is an Actor/Educator/Producer, self-employed with Adilah Barnes Production. She is co-founder of the Los Angeles Women's Theater Festival. She is currently writing a book, "On My Own Terms: One Actor's Journey".
She is one of the founders of Black Escargot, UCSC alumni network.

Alexander Cruz, Jr., Merrill College, Science Communication Certificate Program, 1997
Alex is a Graphic Designer at Evan-Moor Publishers and an Adult Education Teacher at Pacific Grove Unified School District. He works as a graphic designer & illustrator for a K-6 educational publishing house. He also teachs Photoshop ( a digital design program) at the Pacific Grove Adult School. He received his BA in Biology at University of Colorado.


Helen Sam, Kresge College, BA Sociology, 1998
Helen is a Marketing & Outreach Coordinator at Bay Area Video Coalition. She has extensive knowledge of the Bay Area film and video community working for a non-profit post production and training facility in the Bay Area.

Robynn M. Takayama, Oakes College, BA American Studies, 1995
Robynn is a Program Assistant with the San Francisco Arts Commission. She served as staff and board member for several Asian American arts organizations (Asian Heritage Council, Asian American Theater Company, and Kearny Street Workshop) before working for the SFAC. She continues to pursue projects after work as an independent media maker through radio, video, web, and installation work.

Leo is a Senior Financial Analyst at Netgear. He received a MS in Economics-Finance at UC Santa Cruz, 1996.

Kevin Chow, Crown College, BA Business Management Economics, 2000
Kevin is a Financial Analyst at Hewlett Packard Company.

Franklin C. Lee, Stevenson College, BA American Studies, 1995
Franklin is a Manager at Accenture. He still doesn't know what he wants to do when he grows up.

Karen Menjivar, Merrill College, BA Economics, 2001
Karen is a Financial Analyst at Chevron Texaco.

Kafui A. Mensah, Crown College, MA Business Management Economics, 2001
Kafui is a Staff Accountant at Deloitte & Touche, LLP. He is currently working as an auditor in the Silicon Valley for one of the Big 4 Accounting firms. Prior to starting his current position, he was working for Bank of America as a real estate investment banker.

Don Mesa, Oakes College, BA Economics, 1995
Don is a Product Marketing Manager at Electronic Arts. Don started out with a non-profit community agency, setting up a business to provide disadvantaged youth with jobs. He moved to Japan to work in the game industry for 5 years, dealing with Asian-Pacific sales and distribution, then to Japan marketing. He is currently looking after the James Bond franchise at Electronic Arts.

Raul "Bernie" Orozco, Merrill College, BA Economics, 1984
Raul is the Director of State Government Affairs at Sempra Energy. He received a MPA in Public Affairs at the University of Washington, 1987.

Laura Pantaleon, Merrill College, BA Global Economics, 2000
Laura is a Customer Service Manager at Copan Diagnostics, Inc. She handles international accounts, particularly for Latin America and recently Canada. She manages customer service, marketing, and import/export logistics for distributors.

Dom J. Siababa, Merrill College, BA Sociology, 1975
Dom is a Manager at Pacific Gas and Electric Company.

Aja Washington, College Eight, BA Business Management Economics, 2000
Aja is a Finance Manager at Greene Engineers. She is in an MBA program at the University of Phoenix.

Maribel Valencia Castillo, Kresge College, BA Anthropology, 2000
Maribel is an Executive Director at Healthy House within a MATCH. She received a MA in Theological Studies at Harvard University, 2002. She currently works and leads an agency providing services to underserved non European-American communities in Merced County. Their services provides appropriate linguistic and cultural access to healthcare. Her background in Culture and religion with an emphasis on traditional healing practices allows her to do the kind of work she does. She plans to continue on to a PhD in medical anthropology with religion as a component.

David Ferrazares, Porter College, BA Biology, 1989
David is a Pediatrician at La Clinica de La Raza. He received an MD at UC San Francisco, 1994. After medical school he did his residency at Children's Hospital in Oakland from 1994-1997. The Clinic he presently works at serves the Latino community in Oakland's Fruitvale district. He also performs jazz professionally.

Claradina Toya, College Eight, BA Community Studies, 1997
Claradina is a Health Education Specialist at the California Rural Indian Health Board. She is committed to helping the American Indian/Alaskan Native populations in social and health care issues.

Jose Antonio Astorga, Oakes College, BA American Studies, 1995
Jose is in a Ph.D. program in Education at UC Berkeley. He received a MA in International & Multicultural Education at the University of San Francisco, 1997.

Terran Tanikawa-Brown, Oakes College, BA Mathematics, 1999
Terran is a full-time Ph.D. student at UC Santa Barbara's Graduate School of Education, emphasizing in Quantitative Research Methodology. He also works as a part-time instructor of Statistics at Ventura College. He received a MS in Statistics at UC Davis in 2001.

Roia T. Ferrazares, Porter College, BA Art History, 1990
Roia is a Program Coordinator of Mills Public Policy Program at Mills College. In her paid work, she advises students on their attainment of a bachelors degree in Public Policy as well as organize events, maintain the office's website and the operating budget. In her unpaid work, she leads committees on issues of education policy for the city of Berkeley, as well as being the PTA President of her children's school.

Julie Figueroa, Graduate Program, MA, Education, 1995
Julie is a visiting Postdoctorate Fellow at UC Berkeley. She received a Ph.D. in Education at UC Berkeley. 2002.

Al Gonzalez, Oakes College, BA Environmental Studies and Biology,
minor in Education, 1994
Al is a Professor of Biological Sciences at Evergreen Valley College. He received a MS in Environmental/Forest Science at Yale University, 1996. He's involved with Teaching Methods Grant Development and Implementation Field Study Programs Publications.

Nancy I. Kim, Merrill College, BA American Studies, 1994
Nancy is Director of the Asian American/Pacific Islander Resource Center at UC Santa Cruz. She's also a part-time faculty, teaching Asian American Studies. She received a MA in Asian American Studies at UC Los Angeles, 1999.

Richard F. Vasquez, Teaching Credential, 1973
Richard is a Regional Coordinator at UC College Prep Initiative, UC Santa Cruz. Richard helps high school students take advanced placement courses on-line in Northern California and in the San Joaquin Valley.

Roberto is Executive Director at Ola Raza Inc., Immigrants Rights. He received a JD in Law at Hastings College of Law. He is a Board Member with the National Farm Worker Service Center; is Former Chair and Current Member of the California Rural Legal Assistance; Treasurer of California Democratic Party Chicano/Latino Caucus; and Broadcaster, "For Sin Froneteras", on Radio Campesina.

Donna Fujioka, Merrill College, BA Sociology, 1977
Donna is self employed as a Immigration Attorney. She received a MPA in Public Administration at University of Southern California, 1981 and JD in Law at UC Davis, 1985. She was Assistant Research Director for the Wartime Relocation and Internment Commission which studied the forced evacuation of Japanese Americans and Alaskan Aleuts during WWII.

Russell Imrie, College Eight, BA Community Studies, 1996
Russell is a Programmer.

Aldo R. Mercado, Stevenson, BA Literature and Legal Studies, 2000
Aldo is a law student at University San Francsciso, School of Law.

Keever Rhodes, Stevenson College, BA Sociology, minor in Education, 1993
Keever is a trial attorney with Early, Maslach & Rudnicki. She received a MSW in Social Work at UC Los Angeles, 1995 and received a JD in Law at Loyola University. In addition to practicing law, she also works with children who are victims of physical and emotional abuse.

Jerry Ruiz, Crown College, BA Economics, 1977
Jerry is Senior Counsel at Wells Fargo Bank in Los Angeles. He received a JD in Law at Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California, Berkeley. Ken E. Batchelder, Stevenson College, BA History and East Asian Studies, 1990
Ken is a Center Adjudications Officer. He received a MA in History at the University of Colorado and Ph.D. Studies at Northwestern.

Patrick Chandler, College Eight, BA History and Politics, 1999
Patrick is a Consultant with the California Legislative Black Caucus. He currently works to improve lives for African-Americans in California. The California Legislative Black Caucus is a body of the State Legislature and is similar to the Congressional Black Caucus. Just in case it is misunderstood, the CLBC is not a non-profit, but an actually body of the government for the State of California. He is willing to help any student interested in working in politics in California. No question is a stupid question, I will answer any question posed to me. Also, I served as an Americorps volunteer after college and can answer any questions regarding that as well.

Laura Martínez Chávez, Oakes College, BA Latin American Studies, 1998
Laura is a Domestic Violence Counselor with the Women Escaping A Violent Environment (WEAVE). She received a PA as a Physician's Assistant at UC Davis, June 2000. She has also worked as a Health Education Specialist. She lived and worked in Honduras, 91-92 and El Salvador, 93-94 in rural health posts/clinics.

Christine Diaz, Oakes College, BA Politics, 2000
Christine is a Public Policy Directory at SEIU, Local 434B. She is currently working on the issues of healthcare and affordable housing for the homecare and nursing home workers that the SEIU, Local 434B Los Angeles represents. Before coming to SEIU, Local 434B, she worked for State Senator, Gloria Romero. she has been very active in Los Angeles electoral politics since her return to the area.

Adrian Dorris, Oakes College, BA Philosophy, 1998
Adrian is a graduate student in a Masters of Science program in Rehabilitation Counseling and pursuing a Pupil Personnel Services Credential at San Diego State University. He is participating in the Native American Collaboration Project at San Diego State University.

Yvette Galindo, Merrill College, BA Community Studies, 1986
Yvette is Human Resources Director with the Center for Employment Training. She received a MA in Urban Planning at UC Los Angeles, 1989.

Elia S. Godinez, Porter College, BA Sociology, 2000
Elia is a Children's Social Worker II at the Los Angeles County DCFS.

John R. Gutierrez, College Five (Porter), BA Commuinity Studies, 1973
John is a Case Manager, Consumer Service Coordinator at North Los Angeles County Regional Center. He received a MSW in Social Work at University of Southern California, 1975.

Crystal Hernandez, College Eight, BA Environmental Studies, 1997
Crystal is a Deputy Probation Officer with the Los Angeles County Probation Dept. She currently works as a Court Officer in juvenile superior court. A court officer is a probation officer assigned to a specific court department as a liason between the probation department and the courts. Court Officers work closely with the District Attorney's office, public defenders, and court appointed attorneys.

Christine Herrera, College Eight, BA Psychology, 1994
Christine is a Psychiatric Technician/Team Recorder at Atascadero State Hospital. She received an Associates degree in Psychiatric Technology at Mission College, 1998. She started working in Santa Cruz with Avenues to Mental Health and Opal Cliffs in Capitola as a mental health worker, working with the mentally ill. She went on to work for Avenues which later became Alliance for 7 years. She returned to school to obtain a license as a psychiatric technician and has worked in emergency rooms, locked psychiatric facilities, and currently works in a state hospital for the criminally insane. Working in all these facilities with her multicultural backround has been a benefit in speaking and relating to a diverse population.

Dorris N. Lam, College Eight, BA Economics and Environmental Studies, 2000
Dorris is a Regulatory Analyst at California Public Utilities Commission.

Edenilson Quintanilla, Oakes College, BA Latin American Latino Studies and Politics, 2000
Edenilson is a Analyst with the Santa Cruz County. He has been involved with the elections, voter registration and public relations.

Eric Thomas, Oakes College, BA Economics, 1984
Eric is Deputy Executive Director of the State Treasurer in California. He received a MA in Public Administration at the University of Washington, 1987. He has worked as a middle school teacher, a transportation planner, a financial analyst, and various management positions in government. He has traveled extensively to broaden his horizons. He is one of the founders of Black Escargot, UCSC alumni network. He is currently serving as President of the UCSC Alumni Association.

Nicole Young, Crown College, BA Psychology, 1992
Nicole is self employed as a Management Consultant. She received a MSW in Social Work, with an emphasis in Human Services Management, at Boston University , 1996. She has over 14 years of experience working in the not-for-profit sector. She worked as the Associate Director for Women's Crisis Support~Defensa de Mujeres for six years. She has just started a management consulting practice in Santa Cruz County.

Vivek Agrawal, Cowell College, BA Chemistry, 1996
Vivek is a Manufacturing and Process Engineering Manager at Santur Corp. Previously, he held various engineering roles in Research and Product Development for SDL, Inc. which was bought by JDS Uniphase for $41B at the peak of the telecom bubble. He received a MS in Electrical Engineering at Santa Clara University, 2002.


Humphrey Chan, Cowell College, BA Information Systems Management, 1995
Humphrey is a Project/Systems Consultant at San Francisco Federal Reserve. He administers high-end Unix servers and provides technical consultation to various projects.


Celina Hernandez, College Eight, BA Earth Sciences, 1997
Celina is a Geologist at Cambria Environmental Technology. As a geologist she had a few choices in her career. She worked in geotechnical engineering (soils engineering) for a couple of years in Santa Cruz. When she moved to the bay area, she decided to try environmental consulting. She's been working for three years in the environmental industry and enjoys it.


Christina Maldonado, Cowell/College Eight, BA Psychology, 1996
Christina is a Manufacturing Collaborations Site Leader at Genentech, Inc. She would like to participate at the MCC conference but her travel schedule at work is demanding and limits her participation. She is willing to provide her name for students to contact her. John Nishio, College V (Porter College), BA Biology, 1978
John is Director, Photosynthesis and Plant Productivity Research Center at CSU Chico and Adjunct Professor. He was a professor of plant cell biology at the University of Wyoming for 13 years before moving to Chico in 2002. He received a Ph.D in Plant Molecular & Physiological Biology at UC Berkeley. His experiences include working as a janitor, farm laborer, secretary, fire fighter, national park ranger naturalist, environmental educator, and actor.

Cecilie is Senior Knowledge Engineer at Expert Support. She received a MA in Linguistics at University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, 1981.

Carol Hoshizaki, Crown College, BA Biology, 1981
Carol is a Data Manager at Community Technology Alliance. She also has a BA in English Literature from UC Los Angeles, 1976. She has worked in the relational database field for almost 20 years in the nonprofit, healthcare, medical software, and insurance brokerage industries.

Keiko O'Leary, Kresge College, BA Linguistics and Computer Science, 2000
Keiko is a Dialog Designer. Typical telephone systems say "For mango, press 1. For kiwi, press 2." Dialog designers create systems that say "Would you like mango or kiwi?" and that understand when you respond "I'd like mango, please."

Eric Xavier, Merrill College, BA History and Sociology, 1977
Eric is Principal at R.E. Xavier & Associates (Consulting Firm). He received a Ph.D. in Sociology and Communications at UC Berkeley.

Alejandro is a bilingual Elementary Teacher at H.A. Hyde Elementary School. He received a Teaching Credential at UC Santa Cruz, 1996.

Catalina Berumen, Oakes College, BA Psychology 1995
Catalina is a teacher at Starlight Elementary, Pajaro Valley Unified School District. She received he MA in Education and a Bilingual Teaching Credential, 2000. Her teaching focus is equity and social justice.

Lisa Tanikawa-Brown, Oakes College, BA Language Studies, minor in Education 1998
Lisa is a teacher at Ventura Unified School District. She is teaching second grade in a Spanish Two-Way Immersion program. She is currently working toward an administrative servcies credential and MA in Educational Administration through CSU Northridge.

Gloria Estavillo, Stevnson College, BA Literature, 1995
Gloria is a Coach, Secondary School Redesign at San Francisco Unified School District. She received a MA in Education at Harvard University, 2001.

Felicia M. Hashimoto, Kresge College, BA Anthropology, minor in Education, 1992
Felicia is a 3rd grade teacher at San Leandro Unified School District. She received a MA in Education at University of San Francisco. After graduating from UCSC, she went to Japan through the JET program. She team-taught High School English at two different public schools for two years. In graduate school she worked full time as a preschool teacher.

Sandra Huerta, Merrill College, BA Politics, 1992
Sandra is a School Counselor at Los Angeles Unified School District. She received a MA in School Counseling at CSU Northridge.

Andrés Martín, Oakes College, BA Psychology, 1998
Andrés is a Guidance Counselor at Ramona Unified School District. He completed a MA in Counseling with Pupil Personel Service Credential at Univesity of San Diego, 2000. Andrés presented a workshop at the 8th International Counseling Conference on "Counseling Issues with Latin American Generation X".

Adolfo Mercado, Kresge College, BA Anthropology and Latin American and Latino Studies, 1998
Adolfo is an Upward Bound Learning Specialist at Yuba College. He is an educator without the rigidity of a traditional school structure. He targets students from low-income families, potential first-generation college students.

Rosa M. Plaza, Oakes College, BA American Studies, 1995
Rosa is the Associate Director of Escuela Popular. She received a MA in Bilingual/Bicultural Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. She started a charter school with 2 other UCSC alumni in 1999 in East San Jose. The school is a K-12 Dual Language Accelerated Family Learning Center.

Sonal Patel, Kresge College, BA Anthropology, 1996
Sonal is a Kindergarten-1st grade Multiage Teacher at San Leandro Unified School District. She received a MA in Education at UC Berkeley, 2000.
