Academic Preparation for Nutrition

Dietitian/Nutritionist

A Clinical Nutrition major provides students with training in normal and therapeutic nutrition, biological and social sciences, food science, communication, business management and food service management. These majors fulfill the academic requirements for admission into a dietetics internship or the equivalent, which must be completed before qualifying for the registration as a dietitian. Registered dietitians work in a wide variety of employment settings, including health care, business and industry, community/public health, education, research, government agencies and private practice.

Many work environments, particularly those in medical and health-care settings, require that an individual be credentialed as an Registered Dietitian (RD).

In order to become an RD, you must:

Receive a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. university/college and coursework approved by the American Dietetics Association/s (ADA) Commission on Accreditation of Dietetics Education (CADE).

Complete a CADE-accredited, supervised practice program at a health-care facility, community agency, or food service corporation . . by itself or in combination with undergraduate or graduate studies. Practice programs typically last 6 to 12 months.

Pass a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

Complete continuing professional education requirements to maintain registration.
