Single Subject Teaching Credential

Requirements for High and Middle School Teacher is California

A Single Subject Teaching Credential authorizes the holder to teach the specific subject(s) named on the credential in departmentalized classes such as those in most middle schools and high schools. The subjects available for Single Subject Teaching Credentials are as follows:

Agriculture
Art
Biological Sciences (Specialized)
Business
Chemistry (Specialized)
English
Foundational-Level Mathematics
Geosciences (Specialized)
Health Science
Home Economics
Industrial and Technology Education

Languages other than English (specify)
Mathematics
Music
Physical Education
Physics (Specialized)
Science: Biological Sciences
Science: Chemistry
Science: Geosciences
Science: Physics
Social Science

Applicants must satisfy all of the following requirements for the Five-Year Preliminary Teaching Credential:
  1. Complete a baccalaureate or higher degree

  2. Pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST)

  3. Complete a single subject teacher preparation program including successful student teaching

  4. Verify subject matter competency with either:
    • Passage of required test(s) (CSET/SSAT, Praxis ) Information, including passing scores and registration, can be found in Verifying Subject-Matter Competence leaflet CL-674S (on the web site: www.ctc.ca.gov)
    • Completion of Complete a California Çommission approved subject matter undergraduate program
    • For Specialized Science subjects only, pass the appropriate subject matter exams or oftain verification of completion of subject-matter coursework for the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. See details on Commission web site on the Single Subject Teaching Credential web page

  5. Satisfy the Developing English Language Skills requirement including Reading instruction course (usually included in teacher prep. program)
  6. Complete a course in the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution, or pass an examination given by a regionally-accredited college or university (usually included in teacher prep. program)

  7. Complete foundational computer technology course (usually included in teacher prep. program)
