Multiple Subject Teaching Credential
Requirements for Elementary School Teachers in California
A Multiple Subject Teaching Credential authorizes the holder to teach in a
self-contained classroom (all subjects are taught by the same teacher
in the same room).
Applicants must satisfy all of the following requirements
for the Five-Year Preliminary Teaching Credential:
- Complete a baccalaureate or higher degree
- Pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST)
- Verify knowledge of the subject (subject matter competence) by achieving a passing score on the appropriate examination: CSET
- The CSET Multiple Subjects exam comprises three subtests. Each subtest includes multiple-choice and constructed-response items
- Subtest I: reading, language and literature; history and social science
- Subtest II: science; mathematics
- Subtest III: physical education; human development; visual and performing arts
- Complete a multiple subject teacher preparation program including successful student teaching and obtain a formal recommendation for the credential by the college or university where the program was completed.
- Pass the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA)
- Satisfy the Developing English Language Skills, including Reading requirement by completing a comprehensive reading instruction course (included in teacher prep programs)
- Complete a course (2 sem. or 3 quarter) in the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution, or pass an examination given by a an accredited college or university (included in some teacher prep programs)
- Complete foundational computer technology course work that includes skills in the use of computers in educational settings (included in most teacher prep. programs)
