What
is the American Indian Mentoring Program?
The program is designed to help Native American students at UCSC,
succeed academically, socially and provide leadership opportunities.
Mentors will help Mentees get acclimatized to academics and student
life at UCSC. As a Cohort in the mentoring program, you will participate
in various social activities, and complete individual tasks as a
group such as reading important articles on Native American in Higher
Education. This program is designed to be mutually beneficial for
both program mentors and program mentees.
Meet
a Mentor
My name is Soma de Bourbon. I am Blackfeet and French. I am a graduate student in the History of Consciousness program. My dissertation is on the adoption of Native children by White people. I look at the continued colonization of Native people, particularly Native children, by the government. I grew up in urban settings but was always apart of an urban Indian community. I am one of 6 children and we grew up extremely impoverished. I am the first in my family to go to college. I am the mother of an 8 year old girl. My main role in the world is as a mother to Kaya, my daughter. I feel very fortunate to be getting an education. I am committed to working with other Native people on and off campus.
