NON-TENURED FACULTY DEVELOPMENT AWARDS

The Non-tenured Faculty Development Program provides eligible non-tenured ladder-rank faculty with varying opportunities designed to facilitate a positive tenure review.

Each year, during fall quarter, allocations of block grant funding are made by the Administration to the Divisions pending the release of the subsequent year’s budget. Taking into account the number of eligible faculty and the funding allocated, Divisions determine the maximum awards available in each of two award categories (General and Pre-tenure). See the below guidelines and criteria for additional information regarding the two types of awards.

Each Division is responsible for distributing the Call for applications for the Non-tenured Faculty Development program to those faculty members eligible to apply. Any faculty members with questions regarding eligibility or the guidelines and criteria for this program should contact their Divisional Academic Human Resources Coordinator.

GUIDELINES AND CRITERIA

GENERAL AWARDS

These grants provide untenured ladder rank faculty (prior to their 18th quarter of service) with special opportunities for research, advanced or independent study, or assistance in increasing teaching effectiveness. These awards may not be used for leaves of absence without pay. Special consideration will be given to faculty who undertake an extra burden of committee representation and mentoring obligations. Women and underrepresented ethnic minorities are encouraged to apply for these funds.

Fundable activities include:

PRE-TENURE AWARDS

The Pre-Tenure Award is intended to support junior faculty who are highly promising and can effectively utilize faculty development support. Special consideration will be given to faculty who undertake an extra burden of committee representation and mentoring obligations. The award provides release time from regular duties for major concentration on scholarly and research activity. The award should be made prior to tenure review and early enough in the career for such assistance to have a positive impact (usually just prior to mid-career or just prior to tenure review). This award may include formal linkage of the junior member with a senior faculty member who will provide collegial support and professional guidance. Awards are made on a competitive basis to support research projects or other appropriate scholarly or creative activity. Women and underrepresented ethnic minorities are encouraged to apply for these funds.
