Appointments in this series may also be assigned to qualified individuals who are professional practitioners of appropriate distinction, or whenever such an affiliation supports the academic and professional endeavors of the department.

A. DESCRIPTION OF SERIES

  1. Titles and ranks in this series are:

    a. Assistant Adjunct Professor

    b. Associate Adjunct Professor

    c. Adjunct Professor

B. CRITERIA (see APM 210-1 for an explanation of the criteria)

A candidate for appointment or advancement in this series shall be judged by the four criteria specified below (see APM 280-10). Evaluation of the candidate with respect to these criteria shall take appropriately into account the nature of the University assignment of duties and responsibilities and shall adjust accordingly the emphasis to be placed on each of the criteria. For example, a candidate may have a heavy workload in research and a relatively light workload in teaching. The four criteria are (1) teaching, (2) research and creative work, (3) professional competence and activity, and (4) university and public service.

Without salary appointments, with or without step, may be made when affiliation with the campus would serve to facilitate the integration of the academic and professional components of the instructional and research program. A without salary appointment may be made without step inasmuch as there is no expectation of progression through the ladder for those appointed on a without salary basis. Review for appraisal or promotion to the ranks of Associate or full Adjunct Professor is at the discretion of the chair/unit head/PI, with concurrence of the divisional dean.

C. TERMS OF SERVICE

Appointments and reappointments in this series may be made for the known period of approved funding, but not to exceed the normal period of service of the step to which the candidate is appointed or advanced. A projected period of employment, not exceeding the normal period of service, may extend beyond the funding end date but must be contingent on funding renewal and/or availability. Terms of appointment are:

Rank Term of appointment
Assistant Adjunct Professor Maximum of 2 years
Associate Adjunct Professor (Steps I, II, III) Maximum of 2 years
Associate Adjunct Professor (Steps IV, V) Maximum of 3 years
Adjunct Professor Maximum of 3 years

These restrictions also apply to those appointed on a without salary basis.

Appointment and reappointment letters must contain the following statement:

"University policy requires that you be informed of the following: appointments to the title of <rank> Adjunct Professor are self-terminating (no further notice of nonreappointment will be forthcoming) and do not create an obligation on the part of the university to either extend or renew the appointment."

D. LIMIT ON SERVICE

Rank Appointment % Limit on service
Assistant Adjunct Professor 51% or more 8 years
Assistant Adjunct Professor 50% or less none
Associate Adjunct Professor any none
Adjunct Professor any none

Each appointment to the title of Assistant Adjunct Professor shall be for a period not to exceed two years, and, when appointed at 51% or more, is subject to the eight-year limit as outlined in APM 133.

I. LIMIT ON FUNDING FROM 19900 FUNDS

Rank Appointment % Limit on service
Assistant Adjunct Professor 51% or more 8 years
Associate Adjunct Professor 51% or more 8 years
Adjunct Professor 51% or more 8 years

Appointments are intended to be supported primarily by non-state funds.

As a minimum, one half of the funding for the base salary shall come from non-state funds. The Chancellor,  may authorize funding more than 50 percent of the base salary of the appointment from State funds for a period normally not to exceed two years. When an appointment in any rank is supported by State funds for 51% or more, the total period of such appointment, either alone or in combination with prior appointments in this series, may not exceed eight years. In other words, there is a university-wide, cumulative life-time eight-year limit on State funding in this title (and in combination with other titles). See APM 133 for a list of these titles.

With the Chancellor's authority, appointments at 50% or less may be fully state funded. There is no limit on the total number of years an individual may hold a series of such appointments. Departmental provisions for support of those in fiscal year research titles (e.g. Professional Research series) may not be used to support appointments in this series.

E. RESTRICTIONS ON USE OF TITLE

  1. Review for appointment to a title in the Adjunct Professor series is preceded by decanal approval of the position. Appointment in this series is intended for those where research and teaching activity are elements of a single position.
  2. Professional researchers who teach less than one course a year, or equivalent, on a regular basis should hold a Lecturer title in conjunction with the research title, rather than an appointment in the Adjunct Professor series.
  3. Individuals who are primarily researchers and who teach regularly at least one course a year (or equivalent) may be appointed in the Adjunct Professor series for their whole appointment.
  4. For appointments in which teaching is the main activity, it should be demonstrated clearly before appointment to the Adjunct Professor series that a "teaching only title" such as Lecturer is not appropriate.
  5. If, during an appointment in the Adjunct Professor series, research or teaching ceases to be part of the appointee’s duties, the individual should be considered for transfer to another title.

F. SALARY

  1. The academic salary scales for the professor series apply. The normal period of service at each step in this series coincides with those of the Professor series as described in APM 220-18-b.
  2. Nine-month academics paid at the 1/12th rate are eligible to receive additional compensation at the 1/9th rate, up to three-ninths, as summer salary for research if extramural funds are available.

G. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  1. Initial appointments and reappointments in this series are conditional on programmatic need and the availability of funds. Each individual shall be notified to this effect at the time of appointment or reappointment. (see APM 280-17-b)
  2. Neither tenure nor security of employment is acquired by appointment to a title in this series.
  3. An appointee to a title in this series is not eligible to accrue credit toward sabbatical leave.
  4. An appointee to a title in this series is eligible for leave with pay under APM 758 (Leaves of Absence/Other Leaves with Pay) to the extent that funds are available from the fund source(s) from which the salary is paid. If the salary is supported wholly or partially by State funds, then the leave will be supported by State funds in the same percentage of time.
  5. Appointments expire upon the end date and additional notice of the ending of the appointment is not required. However, in cases when an appointment has been renewed at least once and if the funding sources and campus procedures permit, it is desirable but not required that a reasonable period of notice be given. Appointees with less than 2 years of service should be given not less than 30 days notice; those with more than 2 years of service should be given not less than 60 days notice. If it is not possible to provide this notice, the dean will review the case to confirm appropriateness of the notice period.
  6. Termination prior to the specific end date shall be only for good cause and is subject to the provisions of Standing Order 103.9.
  7. The Faculty Code of Conduct (APM 015) applies to appointees in this series. Corrective Action and Dismissal (APM 150) applies to appointees in this series.
  8. The Non-Senate Academic Appointees/Grievances Policy (APM 140) applies to appointees in this series.

H. FOURTH YEAR APPRAISAL OF AN ASSISTANT ADJUNCT PROFESSOR

  1. A midcareer appraisal is to be conducted during the fourth year of service in the title of Assistant Adjunct Professor or when service has accumulated in combination with certain other specified titles (c.f. APM 133). An appraisal is not required for Assistant Adjunct Professors appointed on a without salary basis, inasmuch as there is no expectation of progression through the ladder. However, review for appraisal of one appointed on a without salary basis may be undertaken, at the discretion of the chair/unit head/PI, dean or director.
  2. If reviewers find that the evidence does not justify continued candidacy, the recommendation shall be non-reappointment or terminal appointment.

I. PROMOTION REVIEW OF AN ASSISTANT ADJUNCT PROFESSOR

  1. A review to determine status beyond the eighth year of service for an Assistant Adjunct Professor must take place no later than the seventh year unless the individual is (a) under notice of non-renewal of appointment as a result of a prior review or (b) has given written notice of resignation.

J. NON-RENEWAL OF APPOINTMENT OF AN ASSISTANT ADJUNCT PROFESSOR AS A RESULT OF A PERSONNEL REVIEW

  1. When a personnel review results in a decision not to promote or not to renew the appointment of an Assistant Adjunct Professor, the approving authority will provide the individual with written notification of a one-year terminal appointment provided that the funding source will so permit. If the funding source is unable to sustain an additional one year appointment, a minimum of three months notice must be given.
