A. DEFINITION
A professor retired from the University of California who is recalled to serve
in a research capacity may be appointed to this title. A retired professor who
is recalled for teaching only, or for service, should be appointed to one of
the Professorial recall titles. In the event that a professor is recalled to
teach and to do research, both the Research Professor title and the Professorial
recall title may be needed. The terms and conditions of employment for a faculty
member who is recalled for research parallel those of a faculty member who is
recalled to teach.
B. CRITERIA
Appointees to the Research Professor title must be able to demonstrate the continuation of their high level of scholarship since retirement. Deans may use their discretion in determining if an emeritus faculty member meets this criterion, which may include evidence of one or more of:
1. an active external grant, a proposal to attain funding, or a recent history of external grants
2. internal salary funds for research
3. publication of scholarly books, monographs, or journal articles
4. regular scholarly presentations at professional meetings
C. TERMS OF SERVICE
Appointments shall normally be made for one year or the duration of the grant. Appointments shall have a specific ending date. An appointment expires on that date, and no notice is required. Reappointments are not automatic. Following review, an appointment may be renewed. Requests for renewal of an appointment will follow the same procedures as those for appointment (see Section E).
D. SALARY
Salaries are negotiated and may be paid on a by-agreement basis.
E. PROCEDURES
Requests for appointment are normally initiated through a department or ORU. In accordance with department procedures, the chair will consult appropriately with the faculty. When the unit concurs, the chair or director recommends the appointment to the dean. When deemed appropriate by the deciding authority an appointment may be affiliated with the appropriate academic division.
The recommendation must address the ability of the candidate. Documentation of the candidate's abilities should include an evaluation of activities during the current year and the last several years. The recommendation should specifically comment on evidence of continued scholarship, as evidenced by the criteria described in Section B above and the availability of supporting resources within the unit. The recommendation should demonstrate how the individual's research contributes to the unit's mission.
The Committee on Academic Personnel must review any proposed appointment or reappointment to the title of Research Professor.
F. AUTHORITY
The academic deans have been delegated the authority to approve appointments and reappointments to this title. This authority may not be further re-delegated. The deans will notify the individual of the appointment in writing, with copies to the recommending unit. The Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor has retained the authority to approve exceptions to the Campus Recall Procedures or to these procedures.
